Calder Suitcase Box

This piece was created in honor of the centennial celebration of Calders Circus, in collaboration with the Calder Foundation and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Calder began his Circus in Paris in 1926 as a portable distillation of the natural circus fashioned from wire, cork, fabric, and other materialsat once sculpture, theater, and performance.

This wooden box references the five suitcases used to store and transport Calders Circus. It features period-specific ephemera and exact replicas of the original travel stamps, hotel stickers, and train tickets affixed to Calders valises, along with the artists painted signature. Each item is unique; no two pieces are exactly alike.
